Types of Wireless Internet

What is Wireless Internet?

It refers to wireless computer network and usually associated with networks used for telecommunication. As the name suggests, the interconnection between networks in wireless internet doesn’t require wire. This computer network is implemented through system of remote information transmission which utilizes various types of electromagnetic waves. This kind of transmission system is implemented through physical level of network.

Different Types of Wireless Internet

  • Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPAN)

It is a type of wireless internet which can be implemented in confine or small area. The interconnection between devices (computer or laptop) can be done if they are close to each other. For instance, A Bluetooth connection uses WPAN to interconnect two devices such as laptop and headset.

  • Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)

In this type of wireless internet network connection, two or more devices can be connected with the use of wireless distribution system. This system usually utilizes spread-spectrum. It can provide connection at area. Hence, the user can still connect with the network within the covered wireless area. One of the most commonly known wireless internets that implements WLAN is WiFi.

  • Wireless Wide Area Networks (WWAN)

Wireless WAN is commonly used in separated building or branch office since it can cover larger and wider outdoor area. These networks are commonly installed on 2.4 GHz band. The usual system consists of access points, base station gateways and bridging relays that don’t require wire cable. When this system is combined with renewable energy sources such as solar panels, it can be stand alone configurations.

  • Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks (WMAN)

This is used to link a number of WLAM. WMAN is also referred as WiMAX.

  • Cellular Internet

This wireless internet is associated with mobile networks. User can access internet through cellular phone providers. The system may involve accessing internet right from the mobile or through USB device from network provider. Cellular internet utilizes WAN. In most cases, password and username is required to access the internet.
