Types of CD Packaging
The technology of compact disc was first introduced on late 1982. This established the bound from analog recordings to digital. At present time, compact disc media is commonly called as “CD” which provides better sound quality and greater storage capacity compare to the later recording and sound technologies. While CDs are less vulnerable to damage and provide better durability than cassette tapes and vinyl records, yet they need proper packaging for security purposes.
Below are the lists of different types of CD packaging. They vary mainly on the materials and how they protect the CDs from damage.
Jewel Cases
This kind of CD packaging is usually made of clear, firm plastic. It provides excellent storage security for the CD. Jewel CD cases are designed with semi-rigid plastic molded inside the cases. These molds have nubs in the center which hold the CD in place during transport. The clear cases have hinges in the door sides which can be closed and snapped. While there are different CD packaging are introduced in the market over the years, Jewel cases remain popular CD storage product up to now.
CD jackets
CD packaging jackets look like a compact version vinyl record jackets and usually come with cardboard material. Although they are less expensive than jewel cases, they provide lower level of CD protection against damage. They do not contain any mechanism that will hold the CD in place during transport. CD jackets are designed with printing in its front and rear portion.
Digipak
Digipak is less expensive compare to jewel cases but provide the same level of CD storage protection. This is made of cardboard but in contrast of CD jackets, it has mechanism which holds the CD in secure place during transportation. Digipak CD cases have semi-rigid mold glued inside the cardboard jacket. It is designed with several panels customized with preferred sizes.
Paper CD Sleeve
This is the cheapest type of CD packaging. It is designed with paper sleeve, molded in cases made of clear plastic. While paper sleeves offer good storage solution, it presents less CD protection during transportation.
Spindle
If you are looking for storage solution for black CDs, spindle is for you. This is often used as storage method for bulk blank CDs. It is made of clear, rigid plastic. With spindle CD packaging, you can stack massive number of CD and hold them in place through clear plastic cover. Its main downside is it poses lower level of protection.
